Glowworm Kayaking from Rotorua: Evening Tour or Lake Rotoiti?
4 min read
Book the 3-hour evening glowworm kayak if you want dusk on the water and caves lit by glowworms; book one of the two Lake Rotoiti tours if the hot pools at Manupirua, reachable only by water, matter as much as the glowworms. All three are guided and all three visit a glowworm cave, but they differ in length, time of day and what happens between the paddling.
| Option | Duration | From | Best fit |

| Rotorua glowworm kayak tour | 3 hours | €113.56 | Evening paddle and glowworm caves |
| Daytime Lake Rotoiti kayak and hot pools | 3.5 hours | €95.90 | Daylight paddle, small cave, hot pools |

The evening tour: last light, then the caves
The booking page lists three hours, about two and a half of them in the kayak. You meet at the Rotorua Information Centre, and the guide drives the group past the Redwoods forest to the operator’s base on a lakeshore; ask the operator which lake if that matters to you. After a safety briefing and basic instruction you follow the shoreline in the last light and enter small caves once it is dark. The operator says to allow at least three hours for the round trip from Rotorua, and one reviewer counted four hours in total, so leave the rest of the evening open.
The booking page sets the minimum age at 5, with one adult per child. Equipment is provided.
Daytime on Lake Rotoiti: glowworms without the dark
Waimarino runs the 3.5-hour daytime tour from its base on Otaramarae Road at Okere Falls, where the Kaituna River leaves Lake Rotoiti. About two hours are spent paddling the quiet edge of the lake, with a small glowworm cave on the way and entry to the Manupirua Thermal Hot Pools included. Hotel transfer is an optional extra. The operator asks for moderate fitness, with stretches of about an hour of continuous paddling, and lists the tour as unsuitable for people with a low level of fitness. Bring swimwear and a towel.
The long version: hot pools, barbecue and a sunset return
Rotorua Adventures Kayak & Raft paddles across Lake Rotoiti to Manupirua Springs, which can only be reached by boat. You soak in pools of different temperatures or swim in the lake while the guide cooks a barbecue dinner; the return is a sunset paddle with a stop at the glowworm caves. Paddling time is about two hours, one hour each way, but the booking page tells you to allow 6 to 6.5 hours, around seven including transfers. Transfers from central Rotorua cost NZ$15 extra per person. The tour runs only from November to April. The minimum age is 3, children under 13 must be with an adult who can paddle a double kayak without help, and the recommended maximum weight is 120 kg.
Recommendation
Choose the Rotorua glowworm kayak for €113.56 for the classic evening: it is the shortest outing and the one built entirely around darkness and glowworms. Choose the daytime Lake Rotoiti tour if you would rather paddle in daylight and finish in the Manupirua pools. Book the 6.5-hour hot pools and barbecue tour between November and April if you want a whole afternoon and evening on Lake Rotoiti and are comfortable paddling an hour each way.
