Redwoods Treewalk: Go by Day or for Nightlights?
4 min read
Go by day to see the forest canopy clearly; choose Nightlights for lanterns, darkness and atmosphere. The elevated Treewalk uses the same redwood setting, but visibility changes the experience enough that first-time visitors should decide whether the trees or the lighting is their priority.
| Option | Format | From | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daytime Treewalk | Self-paced elevated walk | Check official ticket | Forest detail and photography |
| Nightlights | Timed night entry | Check official ticket | Lanterns and evening atmosphere |
| Altitude, Nightlights, daytime Treewalk and glowworms | Combination | €80.35 | Visitors wanting the high-ropes element too |
| Redwoods Altitude high ropes and ziplines | Guided adventure | €58.55 | Height and challenge, not a simple walk |
What daylight gives you
In daylight you can read the height, bark, ferns and spacing of the forest rather than seeing only illuminated sections. It is the better first visit for natural detail, and it is easier to understand moving bridges and platforms when the surroundings are visible. The free ground-level tracks in Whakarewarewa Forest are separate from the paid elevated Treewalk; doing both is a sensible way to compare forest floor and canopy.
What changes after sunset
Nightlights begin within about 15 minutes of sunset. The operator calls the first low-light slot “Twilight”; some natural light remains and the lanterns appear dimmer. For fuller darkness, it recommends choosing a slot at least 20–30 minutes after sunset. Since sunset shifts across the year, a clock time that worked in summer cannot be copied to winter.
Night entry is the more theatrical choice, but you sacrifice some forest detail. It also requires more care if moving bridges or reduced visibility bother you. The booking is now tied to a specific nighttime date and slot, so build your dinner plans around the reserved entry rather than arriving whenever convenient.
Do not confuse Treewalk with Altitude
Altitude is a guided high-ropes and zipline experience with different risks, requirements and equipment. The GetYourGuide combination at €80.35 includes Altitude alongside daytime and nighttime elements; it is not merely a two-entry Treewalk ticket. The separate Altitude tour at €58.55 is for travellers actively seeking challenge. Read its participation restrictions on the booking page before choosing it for a family or mixed-ability group.
Recommendation
Choose daytime if this is your only encounter with the Rotorua redwoods and the forest itself matters most. Choose Nightlights if you already have a daylight forest walk planned and want an evening activity. Book the Altitude combination for €80.35 only when everyone wants the high-ropes component; otherwise buy the simpler Treewalk format directly suited to day or night.
