Rotorua Hot Pools: Polynesian Spa, Wai Ariki or a Forest Hot Tub?

4 min read

Visitors relaxing in lakeside mineral pools at Polynesian Spa in Rotorua

Polynesian Spa is the straightforward mineral-pool choice, Wai Ariki is a two-hour cultural wellness journey, and Secret Spot is a private 45-minute forest hot tub. They are not three versions of the same bath. Choose by atmosphere and time before comparing prices.

Polynesian Spa: come for the pools

The Pavilion area has eight geothermal mineral pools overlooking Lake Rotorua and admits guests aged 12 and over. The operator recommends 90 minutes to two hours. Changing rooms, showers and basic toiletries are included; towels and secure lockers are not included in the Pavilion ticket.

This is the practical pick when you want several temperatures and an open-ended soak without turning the session into a full spa ritual. Families with younger children need a different Polynesian Spa area, not the Pavilion ticket shown here.

Wai Ariki: a sequenced wellness experience

Wai Ariki is owned by Ngāti Whakaue and frames geothermal bathing through cultural storytelling. Its signature Wai Whakaora journey lasts two hours and moves through seven stages including showers, hot-and-cold areas, lake-view pools, geothermal mud and steam. The official minimum age for that journey is 16. The GetYourGuide listing sells this two-hour journey under the name Restorative Journey.

Choose it when the designed sequence and cultural interpretation are the point. It is less suitable for someone who simply wants to sit in one hot pool for an hour.

Secret Spot: privacy rather than mineral variety

Secret Spot’s cedar tubs sit beside Whakarewarewa Forest. A private booking lasts 45 minutes, with arrival requested 15 minutes early, and accommodates up to six people. Bring swimwear and a towel or arrange a hire there. This is the compact choice after cycling or walking in the forest, and groups can share the private setting.

Recommendation

For most adult visitors, the Pavilion Pools at €27.73 offer the clearest balance of time, lake view and multiple pools. Book Wai Ariki for a deliberate premium wellness journey; pick Secret Spot when privacy and a forest setting matter more than geothermal-pool variety. Check health and access questions with the operator before booking rather than inferring suitability from a photo.
